TopOCR - Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I use TopOCR with a scanner?
A: Absolutely! TopOCR will work with any TWAIN compatible scanner. Under the "File" menu, you will find "Select Source" to choose your scanner, and "Acquire" to scan an image.

Q: I want to create image "thumbnails" of the highest possible quality, what should I do?
A: Run the "Image "Binarize" filter from the "Image" menu, then change the Image->Colors... to two, and lastly "Scale" the image to the desired size, make sure you use the "Antialias" method. You can then save the image as a "gif" file. This file combines the desired features of optimum size, ledgibility, and a format that is easily viewable in a web browser.

Q: Can I "Drag and Drop" Image files?
A: Yes you can. Simply drag the image files from your source directory and drop them onto the image window.

Q: Sometimes I get bad results, or the program crashes, why is that?
A: The most common reason is poor image quality. For example, if you have a LOT of skew in the page, or a lot of background surrounding the image. Your results will be greatly improved if you practice taking better quality images. See our mini-tutorial section for suggestions on how to do this. You can also use the left mouse button to define a region, copy/paste it into the "Image Window" and OCR that, this sometimes produces better results.

Q: What languages can TopOCR read?
A: English, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish.

Q:Can TopOCR process pages that contains mixed graphics and text?
A: Yes! TopOCR contains a very sophisticated "page parser", that segments the image of a page into regions of graphics and text, and only processes the text portion.

A:TopOCR supports JPEG, TIFF, GIF and BMP formats, let us know if you need something not currently supported.
